On October 19, the OBBRFC helped run Canada’s first rugby event for children with special needs.
Over 80 students from the Ottawa Catholic School Board came to Carleton University to participate in the event, named RugbyCAN! to showcase the inclusive values of the sport, and to demonstrate that rugby can be played by people of all abilities.
The event was hugely successful, and is a major stepping stone to start building special needs rugby programs similar to what they have overseas. It was also a great effort to engage an army of students, volunteers, teachers, and parents into the sport that might have otherwise never gotten involved in rugby. It was an awesome way to grow the game!
We’d like to thank Coach Nappy for organizing the event, along with our partners at Carleton University’s Men’s and Women’s rugby teams, Rugby Canada and Rugby Ontario.
