***Lucas Bloess was elected as the 2018 President of the Ottawa Beavers and Banshees RFC on November 18. His initial address to the Club’s membership, as follows, is optionally enhanced by the Imperial March and/or a triple shot espresso.***
I’d like to begin by thanking Sorrie for his presidency. Under his leadership, we have managed to introduce a junior girls program. The Junior Beavers were undefeated by any other team in Ottawa. We’ve launched an affordable on-demand clothing store. We have been recognized in various outlets for our efforts and best practices, such as mayoral awards and Rugby Canada press releases. And we’re now a few registrations short from becoming the biggest senior rugby program in the city.
Clearly I don’t take on a mandate looking to fix something that ain’t broke.
What does keep me up at night, though, is where to go next: How do we maintain our growth and expansion while still retaining the identity that we had a few years ago, when we were just half our current size? How do we ensure a consistent experience across multiple teams under a variety of coaches and leadership styles? And how do we do it without burning out our volunteer workforce or crashing our bank accounts?
And that brings me to my goal for the 2018 season: structuring ourselves for success. Moving towards a value-based identity to define what it means to be part of the OBBRFC. And supporting this structure and these values with clear, tangible activities and outcomes that support this identity.
It’s a lot of words. But over the coming weeks and months we will be rolling this vision out in time for the 2018 season.
Don’t expect perfection out of the gate. Mistakes will be made and I expect that we’ll learn from them and adjust ourselves as we move forward. And we will move forward together, as one Club.
